LOCAL TRIO FEATURES Mike Eddy & Don MacKay

Forbidden Jazz Trio returns to Zocalo Café for an evening performance on Fri, Aug. 9.  Comprised of Jake Masri on trumpet, flugelhorn, & vocals, Mike Eddy on keyboards, & Don MacKay on bass, they strive to reach audiences of all ages by performing a wide variety of timeless jazz standards & original compositions. Representing more than 4 decades of experience, their unique blend of voice, brass, & strings will weave their collective magic through 2 sets of entertaining music.

Mike Eddy joins the trio for this special appearance.  He is new to the valley and has had the opportunity to play with many fantastic musicians over the past year, including those in the Lensmen & Jazztet. His music degree in classical piano performance has greatly enhanced his love for Jazz. He has performed in a multitude of groups from Dixie to Rock and was Musical Director for Keyano College Theatre in Ft. McMurray for ten years. Mike was also the recipient of the Alberta Band Director of the Year and of the Alberta Excellence in Teaching Award.

Bassist Don MacKay moved to the valley after 30 years of performing, directing, writing, and teaching music in Victoria.  During his tenure there he played with nearly everyone in the local jazz scene.  Don holds a Master's degree in Jazz studies from UVIC and has written his own composition and arranging method.  He has also travelled extensively with his jazz bands to countries as diverse as Cuba, Japan, and everywhere in between.

Since relocating to the Comox Valley, Don has immersed himself into the music culture, playing and directing whenever and wherever he can (including responsibilities as Musical Director for the musical "Cats" & “The CR Little Big Band”, bassist for the "Just in Time Choirs" and the local combo "Jazztet").  He is an avid supporter of the local jazz scene and currently an active board member of The Georgia Straight Jazz Society.

No stranger to the local music scene, Jake Masri draws his inspiration from classical repertoire to musical theater to Afro-Cuban/New Orleans, and Bebop styles.  His passion for jazz is directly linked to artists such as Herb Alpert, Miles Davis, Chet Baker, & Arturo Sandoval.  As a performance major at VCC, UVIC, & UBC, Jake studied trumpet with Boyd Hood, Gerald Gerbrecht, & trombonist, Dave Robbins.  His studies in jazz exposed him to pros such as Mike Herriot, Bill Clarke, & Hugh Fraser during the local CYMC summer program.  Among his favorite vocal instructors are Ann Mortifee, Rhiannon, Ysaye Barnwell, & Wendy Nixon Stothert.  Since moving to Comox in 2002, Jake has appeared with Quintessence Brass; 6th Street, Jazztown, & Jazz Noir combos; Sounds of 17, Georgia Straight, Arrowsmith, & CR Big Bands; Strathcona Symphony Orchestra, and Just in Time Jazz Choir.

We invite you to join us for a casual, entertaining evening of jazz.  Music commences at 7:30 pm and admission is by donation.  The spacious café features local artwork & it’s licensed kitchen offers a wide selection of sweet & savory dishes along with beverages.  For more info, please contact Zocalo Café & Gallery @ ,
